You might be wondering why a site about arts and artists has a section devoted to website marketing strategies to begin with, so in this post I’d like to tell you a bit about the new new economy and the things you have to do as an artist to market yourself.

Online Website Marketing Strategy For Artists

There is currently less government funding for the arts than there has ever been in our lifetimes. This is a sad truth for those of us who understand the cultural value of art and of supporting artists financially, but it is the truth nonetheless. So, to remain an artist you must do one of two things: get comfortable being a starving artist, or learn how to make money online for beginners.

The strategy that you use to make money online as an artist can go one of two basic ways: either you will try to sell your art online (which is very difficult), or you will find a way to make money by giving away your art online, which is not as difficult as you might think. The internet is all about giving things away for free that at one point would have cost money. So where is all this money coming from?

Sources Of Online Website Marketing Strategy

Two places: through the buying and selling of commodities (not hand-crafted wonders like you make, but things that can be made and sold en masse); and through advertisement for goods and services. A lot of artists are instinctively opposed to advertisement and mass productions, but I’m telling you right now that if you want to make money online as an artist you’re going to have to get over this.

Embrace the commerce, because you cannot escape from it. Embrace the commerce because, in the end, maybe it’s not as bad as we all thought it would be. Embrace the commerce because, at the end of the day, you have to eat and a bottle of wine with dinner would be absolutely lovely.

So here’s where we begin the story of how you can make money online as an artist by setting up your own website. You can just go ahead and disregard everything posted on this blog prior to this post because, honestly, it’s all from 2003 and it’s all crap. Beautiful keyword-rich, aged, ripened crap, but crap nonetheless. We’ll get to all of that soon enough. Anyway, suffice to say that it is not very good reading material for you to hear me pitching website marketing and design services that haven’t existed for half a decade, is it? So just ignore all of that crap and subscribe to my RSS feed and read everything that comes out of this blog from this point forward because I’m going to try to give you the step-by-step.

The Online Website Marketing Strategist: A Profile

I myself am only barely an artist anymore since I have gone on to graduate school to be a professional, and so I am from the outside looking in. Trust me, perspective helps. I’m not so hungry anymore, so for me it is simple to look back on my days as a starving artist and think about all the ways I could have easily come out ahead but didn’t simply because I was too wrapped up in that frenzied moment to understand what needed to be done.

So there’s what you’ll need: you’ll need a cool head, you’ll need a great deal of patience, and you’ll need at least ten hours a week. I think that’s about it for now.
